Disable First-run Dialogs and Autoupdate in Office 2016 for Mac via Profile Manager

Now that Microsoft Office 2016 is available for Mac and many admins are now deploying this across their networks on integrating it in to new images (replacing Office 2011) here is how I suppressed the First-run windows and set the Autoupdate to check Manually instead of Automatically using Profile Manager.

Under the relevant group in Profile Manager, in the Custom Settings section, add a new payload for each of the Office 2016 apps. In my case I didn’t set the settings for Outlook or OneNote as my users don’t use these apps.

com.microsoft.Word
com.microsoft.Excel
com.microsoft.PowerPoint
com.microsoft.autoupdate2

They should be set as follows:

com.microsoft.Word
Key: kSubUIAppCompletedFirstRunSetup1507
Type: Boolean
Value: True
com.microsoft.Excel
Key: kSubUIAppCompletedFirstRunSetup1507
Type: Boolean
Value: True
com.microsoft.PowerPoint
Key: kSubUIAppCompletedFirstRunSetup1507
Type: Boolean
Value: True
com.microsoft.autoupdate2
Key: HowToCheck
Type: String
Value: Manual

Other keys for Outlook and OneNote are:

com.microsoft.Outlook
com.microsoft.onenote.mac
